This unique corner of Spain is the ideal getaway for anyone who enjoys relaxing on superb sandy beaches and great watersports but don't want the hustle and bustle of more commercialised areas.

The area is largely made up of national parks, so protected from mass over development, although all the luxuries one would expect of a major tourist resort are still available with a range of great golf courses, water sports at many beaches and a fantastic array of restaurants to choose from.

On travelling inland the landscape takes on a totaly different persona having a lunar landscape in desert like conditions making it a popular choice for the filming of Westerns style epics.

One of the most romantic towns in south East Spain has to be Mojacar, the tiny white washed houses are dotted throughout quaint cobbled streets, overlooking pristine white sandy beaches. This picturesque scene has long been a firm favourite with writers and painters for many years, now attracting holidaymakers looking for a glimpse of real Spain and naturists who are spoilt for choice with many secluded coves and beaches. The nightlife has a truely cosmopolitan feel much of it centred around the numerous restaurants and cafe bars.

The busiest resort has to be Roquetas De Mar, while it still retains much of its traditional charm it is slowly becoming over run with apartment complex's and hotels making the tourist trade here big business. The towns main strip is a hive of activity, lined with international restaurants and bars, shops selling holiday souvineers, and activities from horse riding to scuba diving. For anyone who really wants to keep their cool there is even a specially designed nudist beach.

For a spot of culture take a day outing to beautiful Grenada, see the magnificent Alhambra palace and prestine gardens filled with opulent flowers and statuesque overflowing fountains. Maybe the wild west show set at Tabernas Dessert would be more up your street, watch the action packed cowboy show, then take a tour around the animal reserve, aviary and reptile house, I'm sure the kids will love it.
