Cheap Holidays to Halkidiki

Part of mainland Greece, this region of Northern Greece offers endless sandy beaches, historical sights and quaint picturesque villages. Most of the tourism here is concentrated in the West peninsula of Kassandra which has many sand and shingle beaches running the length of it. The two less touristy areas of Halkidiki are Sithonia and Cassandra, home to some amazing white sandy beaches which offer good facilities for water sport enthusiasts.

The best months to visit are May to September, although the sea doesn't really warm up until June. July and August are exceptionally hot so best avoided if you have sensative skin which tends to burn easily.

Neos Marmaris situated on the West side of the Sithiona peninsula and has a fantastic sandy beach offering plenty of facilities for the family, if you want a good night out you will then the place to be seen in is Pluton a split level nightclub situated on the waterfront where you can dance your cares away until the early hours of the morning. Other resorts in Halkidiki such as Pefkohori,Kriopigi and Sani are more generally more low key with just a small selection of bars and tavernas making them the ideal choice for a relaxing holiday. For somewhere a bit on the livlier side try bustling Kalithea with its host of bars, shops and tavernas and beautiful sandy beach, a great all round holiday hot spot.

Most of the towns have the traditional market where you can buy local handicrafts and produce such as olive oil, honey, colourful hand woven textiles and delicate embroidery. If its designer names that you are looking for then the only place to be is Thessaloniki city where you will find chic boutiques.

Eating out here is typically Greek with the local tavernas serving good quality homecooked food with lots of fish and spicy grilled meat or mussels cooked in a spicy tomatoe sauce topped with local crumbly cheese. This area is also well known for producing excellent wine, the ideal way to finish your meal.
